Diani Beach is about 25 kilometers long, gently sloping, white sand beach on the Indian Ocean in Kenya . It is located around 35 kilometers south of Mombasa . Diani Beach is the tourist center of the south coast.

In front of the beach are reefs that both keep the sharks away and break the waves of the sea. The reefs are popular diving areas . Larger places nearby are Ukunda with an airport for domestic flights and Msambweni .

Diani Beach is located in the remnants of the Jadini Forest coastal forest. This is home to the largest Kenyan population of Angola colobus monkeys . The Colobustrust Nature Conservation Center provides information about their protection . It builds u. a. Rope-ladder-like suspension bridges "Colobridges", with the help of which the animals can cross roads safely.

Diani Beach is about 250 kilometers south of the equator and 35 kilometers from Mombasa . The Shimba Hills National Reserve is 45 kilometers from Diani Beach. The large national parks Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park are approx. 150 kilometers away from Diani Beach.

traffic

Diani Beach has no infrastructure whatsoever. Most of the transport is carried out by motorcycle taxi and tuk-tuk . Connections to larger cities are made by long-distance bus or minibus . Payment is per person and in cash, although fares are not advertised. Transportation by taxi is also possible, although taxis are not always recognizable as such.

climate

The climate in Diani Beach is tropical and therefore warm all year round. In summer, the high humidity in particular means that the perceived temperatures are well above the actual temperature. The warmest months are January and February. Most rainfall is expected in March to May. Even in September and October it can get very warm in Diani Beach.

tourism

Tourism is the backbone in Diani Beach. There are a number of hotels along the 17 kilometers of Diani Beach. This also attracts hawkers, who are now being kept away from guests in most hotels and bars with the help of security. The enormous amount of tourism also encourages prostitution . In the main season prostitutes arrive from all over the country, who leave after the season. There are a number of bars along the coast that are very popular with tourists and locals alike. Excursion possibilities to the nearby national parks make Diani Beach a popular place for the combination of a beach holiday and a safari.

2014 attack

In 2014, a grenade attack was carried out in a bar south of Diani Beach, injuring ten people. The US State Department issued a travel warning for Kenya. However, there is no general travel warning for Swiss, Austrians and Germans.
