The Shimba Hills National Reserve is a 193 km² nature reserve and is located approximately 30 km southwest of Mombasa in Kenya . It borders the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary in the northeast, which enlarges the wildlife sanctuary.

Shimba Hills is only around 30 km from the famous Diani Beach . In the coastal climate the annual precipitation is 1200 mm. The hilly landscape rises from 130 to 450 meters above sea level and is characterized by mountain primeval forests and lush green meadows. Ernest Hemingway dedicated his novel "The Green Hills of Africa" to the landscape.

The Shimba Hills National Reserve is famous for the simultaneous occurrence of horse antelopes and the rare sable antelopes . There are also elephants , Cape buffalo and various monkeys. In addition, three Maasai giraffes were resettled, but they have not increased any further so far. Overnight stays in the reserve are possible in the Shimba Hills Treetop Lodge , the Sable Bandas and on four campsites.

Due to the high elephant population, a politically and financially large-scale resettlement campaign of several hundred elephants has been started since the beginning of 2006. The animals will be released in the north of Tsavo East National Park.
