The Mount Longonot is a stratovolcano in Kenya , which is estimated erupted for the last time in the years around the 1860th It is located in the Great Rift Valley southeast of Lake Naivasha . Its name can be traced back to the Masai word oloonong'ot , which means "mountain of many mountain ridges " or "steep spurs".
Mount Longonot has been under the protection of the Kenya Wildlife Service since 1983 as part of the 52 km² “Mount Longonot National Park” . A path leads from the park entrance up to the crater rim and further around the crater. A forest of small trees covers the crater floor and small clouds of steam rise from the crater walls. The mountain is home to many wildlife, especially zebras and giraffes .
The mountain can be climbed within one to two hours even with little mountaineering experience. The last climb is a bit steeper. Due to the climatic conditions, you should definitely have enough drinks with you. For a complete hike around the crater you should plan another three to four hours.
Mount Longonot is located 60 kilometers northwest of Nairobi and can be reached via an asphalt road. A nearby town is called Longonot. There is a satellite station south of the mountain.
