The Saiwa Swamp National Park (English swamp "moor") is located about 20 km northeast of Kitale in Trans-Nzoia County in Kenya and is the smallest national park in the country with an area of about three square kilometers .
It was built to protect the swamp antelope ( Tragelaphus spekii ). There are also more than 370 species of birds, monkeys, porcupines , otters, snakes and fish. It includes the wetland lying on a small river and parts of the surrounding rainforest .
During the colonial period , the park was part of a farm and then after Kenya gained independence - after the land was redistributed - a group of conservationists who first declared it a bird sanctuary from 1973 onwards . In 1974 the park became a national park.
