The Sibiloi National Park is located in northern Kenya on the east bank of Lake Turkana . It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as part of the Lake Turkana Parks in 1997 , after it had been protected as a national park by the Kenyan government in 1973.

The region around Lake Turkana is one of the sparsely populated and remote parts of Kenya. The value of the 157 hectare area lies not only in a species-rich ecosystem with the most important breeding area in Africa for Nile crocodiles , but also in the important archaeological site for fossils of hominini and their ancestors as well as other mammals. In the Koobi Fora area , the 2.5 million year old Homo rudolfensis was discovered in 1972 and the 3.5 million year old Kenyanthropus platyops in 1999 .

biodiversity

Apart from the slightly salty Lake Turkana, the landscape is mainly characterized by an arid semi-desert . In addition to a large number of birds and reptiles, there are various mammals such as the giraffe gazelle , the Beisa antelope or the endangered kudu and Grevy's zebra .
