The Marsabit National Park is a national park in Marsabit County in Kenya . The national park is located on Mount Marsabit , near the town of Marsabit . There are three crater lakes in the park , which ensure the water supply for the entire area.

flora

The park is located on and around Mount Marsabit at an altitude of 400 to 1700 m above sea level. It is surrounded by deserts and semi-deserts. Depending on the altitude, the annual precipitation is 300 to 1000 mm. In the valley there is bushland , further up the mountain the landscape becomes grassland , overgrown with acacias and olive trees . In the mountain forest there are some swamps and freshwater lakes, including the Paradiessee, a water-filled volcanic crater.

fauna

In the Marsabit National Park live among other Gerenuks , reticulated giraffes , greater kudu , bushbuck , Grevy's zebras , Kirk-dik , caracal , bat-eared foxes , lions , leopards , cheetahs and hyenas . The African elephants are quite shy here, their population seems secure. In 1973 it was assumed that there were 300 animals, in 1977 900 were accepted and in 1987 there were still 529. Marsabit was the home of the famous elephant Ahmed, who was given individual protection by the Kenyan President because of its special tusks. It is also home to around 400 species of birds, such as the settler weaver , heuglin bustards , racing birds , purple herons , white-bellied noisy birds and silky turacos .
