Ezekiel S. Candler

Ezekiel Samuel Candler Jr. (born January 18, 1862 in Belleville , Hamilton County , Florida , †  December 18, 1944 in Corinth , Mississippi ) was an American politician . Between 1901 and 1921 he represented the first constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ezekiel Candler was a member of a well-known family of politicians. His uncle Milton sat for the State of Georgia in the US House of Representatives from 1875 to 1879, as did his cousin Allen , who was a member of Congress between 1883 and 1891 . The latter was also governor of Georgia from 1898 to 1902 .

Ezekiel Candler and his parents came to Tishomingo County in Mississippi as early as 1870 . There he attended public schools and the Iuka Male Academy . After studying law at the University of Mississippi at Oxford and being admitted to the bar in 1881, he began to work in his new profession in Iuka . Politically, Candler was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1884 he became its chairman in Tishomingo County. In 1887 he moved to Corinth, Mississippi, where he continued to work as a lawyer. He was also on the board of the Democratic Party in Alcorn County .

In 1900 Candler was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first district of Mississippi , where he succeeded John Mills Allen on March 4, 1901 . After he was confirmed in each of the following nine elections, he was able to complete a total of ten legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1921. During his last tenure, he chaired the committee dealing with alcoholic beverages. The prohibition law came into force at this time .

For the 1920 election, Candler was not nominated by his party for another term in Congress. After leaving the House of Representatives, he returned to work as a lawyer. From 1933 to 1937 he was mayor of the city of Corinth. Then he withdrew from politics. Ezekiel Candler died in December 1944 and was buried in Corinth.
