James B. Morgan

James Bright Morgan (born March 14, 1833 in Fayetteville , Tennessee , † June 18, 1892 in Horn Lake , Mississippi ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1891 he represented the second constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

As early as 1840, James Morgan came with his parents to DeSoto County in Mississippi, where the family settled in Hernando . Morgan enjoyed an academic education and then studied law. After his admission as a lawyer in 1857, he began to work in Hernando in his new profession. Between 1857 and 1861, Morgan was also a judge on the local probate court.

During the Civil War, James Morgan rose in the army of the Confederate States to the Colonel on. After the war he became a lawyer again and resumed his old job as a judge at the probate court. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . Morgan was a member of the Mississippi Senate from 1876 ​​to 1878 . Between 1876 and 1890 he attended all of the Democratic congresses in Mississippi as a delegate. From 1878 to 1882 he was Chancellor of the third judicial district of his state.

In 1884 Morgan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he replaced Republican Elza Jeffords on March 4, 1885 . After two re-elections, Morgan was able to complete a total of three terms in Congress by March 3, 1891 . After his time in Congress ended, he returned to work as a lawyer. He died on June 18, 1892 near Horn Lake and was buried in Hernando.
