Van H. Manning
Vannoy Hartrog "Van" Manning (born July 26, 1839 in Raleigh , North Carolina , † November 3, 1892 in Branchville , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1883 he represented the second constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Manning came to Mississippi with his parents as early as 1841. He attended the Horn Lake Male Academy in DeSoto County and then the University of Nashville in Tennessee . Manning moved to Arkansas in 1860 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1861, he began to work in his new profession in Hamburg (Arkansas). During the Civil War he took it to the army of the Confederate States to the Colonel in an infantry unit from Arkansas.
After the war, Manning worked as a lawyer in Holly Springs, Mississippi. He became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1876 he was elected as their candidate in the second district of Mississippi to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Guilford Wiley Wells on March 4, 1877 . After two re-elections, Manning was able to complete a total of three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1883 . Manning also won the 1884 election, this time in the newly created seventh constituency. These elections were successfully challenged by James Ronald Chalmers , who prevented Manning from holding another term in Congress.
After the end of his political activities in Washington Manning worked as a lawyer in the federal capital. He died in Branchville in November 1892 and was buried in Washington.
