Trent Kelly (born March 1, 1966 in Union , Mississippi ) is an American politician . Since June 2, 2015, he has represented the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After graduating from high school, Trent Kelly attended the University of Mississippi in Oxford , where he first received a Bachelor of Arts and later a Juris Doctor . He then graduated from the United States Army War College in Carlisle , which he left with a master's degree in strategic studies . He then worked as a private lawyer from 1995, before he became city prosecutor in Tupelo in 1999 . He held this position until 2011.

In the 1980s, Kelly joined the Mississippi Army National Guard as an engineer. He made it to the Colonel . In 1990 he took part in the Second Gulf War with his unit . He was deployed again in 2005 during the Iraq War, where he held the rank of major and served as an operations officer of the 150th Engineering Battalion. Between 2009 and 2010 he was battalion commander in Iraq . For his military achievements he was awarded the Bronze Star , among other things .

Upon his return, Kelly won the district attorney election for the Mississippi First District Court, which includes Lee , Pontotoc , Alcorn , Monroe , Itawamba , Prentiss and Tishomingo Counties . He took up this post in 2012.

On February 6, 2015, Alan Nunnelee , Republican MP for Mississippi's first congressional electoral district, passed away in the United States House of Representatives. Twelve Republican candidates, including Kelly, ran for his successor. They competed in the open primary on May 12, 2015 against the only Democratic candidate, Walter Zinn. Zinn received the most votes with a share of 17.3 percent, Kelly finished second with 16.3 percent, ahead of Mike Tagert (12.7). Zinn and Kelly thus reached the runoff election on June 2, 2015, in which the Republican clearly prevailed with 70:30 percent. John Boehner , Speaker of the House of Representatives , took the oath of office from him seven days later. Since he was confirmed in office in 2016, he is also a member of the 115th Congress of the United States , which will meet on January 3, 2017 . His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.

Trent Kelly lives with his family in Saltillo . He is married and has three children.
