Thomas Gerstle Abernethy (born May 16, 1903 in Eupora , Webster County , Mississippi , † June 11, 1998 in Jackson , Mississippi) was an American politician . He represented the state of Mississippi in the United States House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Abernethy first attended the public school in Eupora. He then went first to the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa , later to the University of Mississippi at Oxford and then graduated in 1924 from the law department of Cumberland University in Lebanon . After obtaining his license to practice law, he opened a law firm in his hometown in 1925 and practiced there until 1929. Then Abernethy moved to Okolona , Mississippi. There he served as a District Attorney for the third judicial district of Mississippi from 1936 and held this office until 1942.

Abernethy was elected a Democrat in the 78th Congress of the United States in 1942 , and in the 14 subsequent ones. There he worked from January 3, 1943 to January 3, 1973. He decided not to run for the 93rd Congress. During his tenure in the House of Representatives, Abernethy chaired the Committee on Elections No. 1 (79th Congress). Furthermore, in 1956 he was one of the signatories of the Southern Manifesto , a letter of protest against the desegregation. He was also a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1956 and 1960 .

Thomas Gerstle Abernethy lived after his political retreat first in Okolona and later in Jackson, where he died on June 11, 1998.
