Roger Wicker

Roger Frederick Wicker (born July 5, 1951 in Pontotoc , Pontotoc County , Mississippi ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). From 1995 to 2007 he was a member of the United States House of Representatives , and since December 2007 he has been the US Senator for the state of Mississippi.

Early life

Roger Wicker graduated from high school in his hometown of Pontotoc in 1969 and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi in 1973 . Here he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity . In 1975 Wicker received his Juris Doctor from the same university . From 1976 to 1980 he served as an officer in the Air Force and was then a reserve officer until 2003.

Political career

In 1980 Wicker began working on the staff of Congressman and later Senator Trent Lott ; until 1982 he was a member of the United States House Committee on Rules . Wicker then settled in Tupelo , where he initially worked as a judge. From 1984 to 1987 he served as a public defender in Lee County . From 1988 to 1994 Wicker was elected to the Mississippi Senate and ran successfully as Republican for a seat in the US Congress in 1995, after the resignation of Congressman Jamie Lloyd Whitten . Wicker was able to defend his seat six times, usually with a superior majority of votes; in 2006 he was re-elected in his constituency with 66% of all votes cast .

After the resignation of Senator Trent Lott in December 2007, Wicker was appointed and sworn in by Mississippi's Governor Haley Barbour as Lott's successor as US Senator on December 31, 2007 . In November 2008, he won the by-election required by Lott's resignation for the remaining term until 2012, and in November 2012 he was re-elected for a new full term of six years.

In April 2013, a letter addressed to Wicker containing the toxin ricin was intercepted in the Congress mail room. Further letters with the toxin, addressed to President Barack Obama and a third person, were also secured in good time.

In December 2017, Wicker ranked 14th out of 98 in the Lugar Center's Bipartisan Index , which indicates low inventory levels.

Roger Wicker is married and has two daughters and a son with his wife, Gayle. The family is committed to the Southern Baptist Convention , and Wicker himself is a deacon in Tupelo .
