United States Senate Committee on Rules and Administration
The Senate Committee on Rules and Administration (also known as the Senate Rules Committee ) is a standing committee of the United States Senate . He is responsible for the rules of procedure of the Senate, the administration of the Senate buildings and the qualifications of the Senators. This also means that he deals with controversial elections to the Senate.
Compared to its sister committee in the House of Representatives , the House Committee on Rules , it is less influential. The Senate traditionally allows its individual members far more freedom within the rules of procedure, so that control over them has less influence on what happens in the Senate.
Some members are ex officio members of the Joint Committee on Printing and the Joint Committee on the Library .
history
The committee began on December 3, 1867 as a temporary committee. The "Select Committee to Revise the Rules of the Senate" was transferred to the standing committee "United States Senate Committee on Rules" on December 9, 1874.
It has had its current name since January 2, 1947; At the same time he took over the functions of some older and then dissolved committees:
- Committee to Audit and Control the Contingent Expenses of the Senate
- Committee on Enrolled Bills
- Committee on Privileges and Elections
