Johanna Sällström , b. Johanna Maria Ellinor Berglund (born December 30, 1974 in Hägersten / Stockholm ; † February 13, 2007 in Malmö ) was a Swedish theater and film actress . In the German-speaking countries she made a name for herself primarily as an actress in several Wallander films based on books by Henning Mankell .

life and career

First successes

The daughter of a musician grew up in Hälsingland and made her debut at the Hudiksvall City Theater at the age of 15 in Shakespeare's comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream . Only then did Johanna Sällström complete a two-year acting course, although not, like many of her later colleagues, at the Teaterhögskolan (theater school), but at the Södra Latins Gymnasium in Stockholm . From 1994 she became known nationwide through appearances in the Swedish TV soap Tre Kronor . For her portrayal of a young woman addicted to heroin in Under ytan (Under the Surface, Director: Daniel Fridell), at the age of 23, she received the coveted Swedish Guldbagge film award in the category Best Actress . She then withdrew from the media interest in her person by taking an artistic break, which she spent in part outside of Sweden in Copenhagen .

Enquist, Theater, Mankell

In 1999 Sällström starred in the literary film adaptation Magnetisörens femte vinter (The fifth winter of the magnetizer, directed by Morten Henriksen), which was based on a historical novel by Per Olov Enquist . The low-budget film Hot Dog (2002; director: Alexandra Therese Keining) attracted attention , in which she played an artist who, after an abortion and attempted suicide, struggles to give her life a structure. In addition, she occasionally took on stage engagements again. In 2001 she engaged the Malmö Dramatiska Teater to produce the play The Portrait of Dorian Gray based on the novel by Oscar Wilde .

Johanna Sällström was best known to German-speaking audiences as a police officer and daughter of Commissioner Wallander in the Swedish crime series Mankells Wallander . Between the beginning of 2005 and the summer of 2006 she was in front of the camera for a total of 13 feature films based on Henning Mankell's well-known crime novels . The last entry in this series, which was filmed on location in Skåne , Hemligheten (Dark Secrets), premiered in Swedish cinemas on November 10, 2006.

Private

From 2000 to 2002 she was married to the cameraman Albin Sällström. Her daughter Talulah was born from this marriage. At the end of 2004, Johanna Sällström survived the tsunami disaster on Ko Lanta in Thailand, together with her then three-year-old daughter and her younger brother . After returning to her home country, the single mother sought psychological help. She told Tove magazine in an interview in autumn 2005, also looking back at this event: “I always thought I would die before I am 30. Today I'm happy that I'm alive. ”In autumn 2006 Sällström played the role of Nina in a production of Anton Chekhov's drama Die Möwe at the Ystad Theater . Due to illness, however, she canceled half of the planned 18 performances. Because of depression , which had also overshadowed her life several times before, she sought medical treatment.

The actress was found dead in her apartment in the Malmö district of Ribersborg at around 11 p.m. on February 13, 2007. The police, who could not find any external violence, refrained from disclosing an official cause of death. Relatives and colleagues of the actress, as well as doctors from the Malmö University Hospital, in whose psychiatric department she was temporarily treated, however, confirmed emerging rumors and announced that Johanna Sällström had committed suicide.
