Malmö Opera and Music Theater

The Malmö Musiktheater ( Swedish : Malmö opera och musikteater ) is a music and opera house in Malmö and is one of the largest opera houses in Scandinavia . The building is located in central Malmö at Östra Rönneholmsvägen 20 .

building

The theater building was designed in 1933 by architects Sigurd Lewerentz , David Helldén and Erik Lallerstedt and inaugurated on September 25, 1944 as Malmö stadsteater ( Malmö City Theater). As a guide u. a. Max Reinhardt was interviewed and, on his advice, a large revolving stage was planned and an auditorium for around 1500 people. The monumental design language of the building has clear functionalist traits, combined with an appropriate division of the building volume into several smaller structures. The marble-clad entrance facade with the large windows is remarkable. The foyer is decorated with works of art by Carl Milles and Isaac Grünewald . The building and the technical theater equipment were thoroughly renovated in 1973 and 2004 and the acoustics improved. The theater has been a listed building since 1994 .

activity

Today operas , operettas and musicals are performed in Malmö Music Theater, both newly written Swedish works and classical operas. Themed concerts, gala evenings and guest performances are also arranged. With a few exceptions, all operas are performed in the original language. The goal is to professional directors , set designers , singers and conductors in teamwork to give the opportunity to unfold. It should be the center of the music theater of the future.

The first theater manager was the director Lars Rudolfsson , his first production was Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream . 1952-1958 Ingmar Bergman was director of the theater. With the actors who were still little known internationally at the time, u. a. Bibi Andersson , Harriet Andersson , Max von Sydow , and Ingrid Thulin , he staged several important, historically notable, spoken theater productions.

In 1995, the premiere of the musical Kristina från Duvemåla by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson took place here.

In 1992 the Malmö City Theater was reorganized into Malmö Musik och Teater AB and in 1994 it was divided into the following companies: Malmö Dramatiska Teater AB (Malmö Dramatic Theater), Malmö symfoniorkester AB ( Malmö Symphony Orchestra ), Skånes Dansteater AB (Skånes Dance Theater) and Malmö Musikteater AB (Malmö's Music Theater). The current (2007) director is Göran K. Johansson and the opera director is Lars Tibell .
