Patricia Lynn "Patty" Murray (born October 11, 1950 in Bothell , Washington ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party .

Life

Murray was born in Bothell in 1950 to Beverly A. McLaughlin and David L. Johns . After finishing school, she studied art at Washington State University , where she received a bachelor's degree in 1972 . Then she worked in a kindergarten .

From 1989 to 1993 Patty Murray was a member of the Washington Senate ; since 1993 she has been the first woman in Washington history to represent the state in the US Senate . After she was re-elected relatively easily in 1998 and 2004, she faced a strong Republican competitor in the 2010 Senate elections with State Senator Dino Rossi . Only after a two-day count was Murray's renewed victory with a share of the vote of 52 percent. While she won most of the voting districts in the west of the state, Rossi won in all of east Washington.

On January 3, 2011, Murray was able to take up her fourth term in the Senate. On this day she also took over the chairmanship of the Veterans Affairs Committee from Daniel Akaka . She is or was also a member of the Approvals Committee and the Budget Committee . In 2016 she was re-elected with 59.1% of the vote. This means that she will represent her state in the Senate for the next six years. Their term of office then runs until January 3, 2023.

Patty Murray is married with two children. She lives in Bothell with her family.
