Addison G. Foster

Addison Gardner Foster (born January 28, 1837 in Belchertown , Hampshire County , Massachusetts , †  January 16, 1917 in Tacoma , Washington ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ), who served the state of Washington in the US Senate from 1899 to 1905 represented.

Early years

After he was born, his family moved to Oswego , Kendall County , Illinois , where he attended public schools. Foster later moved to Wabasha County , Minnesota , where he did grain and real estate businesses. He also worked there as an auditor and surveyor . Then he moved to Saint Paul in 1873 and to Tacoma in 1888, where he dealt with wood shops. He was also involved in coal mining and railroad construction in Tacoma.

US Senator from Washington

Foster was elected as a Republican to the US Senate and served there from March 4, 1899 to March 3, 1905. He chose not to run for a second term. During his tenure, he was Chairman of the Committee on Coast and Insular Survey ( 56th and 57th US Congresses ) and a member of the Committee on Geological Survey ( 58th US Congress ).

After serving in the US Senate, he returned to his timber business in Tacoma and then retired from active business activities in 1914. He died in Tacoma in 1917 and was then buried in the local Tacoma Cemetery .
