Travis Wayne Childers (born March 29, 1958 in Booneville , Prentiss County , Mississippi ) is an American politician . From 2008 to 2011 he represented the first constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Travis Childers attended Booneville High School until 1976 and then until 1978 the North East Mississippi Junior College , also in Booneville. This was followed by studies at the University of Mississippi in Oxford until 1980 . Childers then worked in the real estate industry.

Between 1991 and 2008 Childers was the administrative director of the Chancery Clerk in Prentiss County. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . After Congressman Roger Wicker was appointed by Governor Haley Barbour to succeed Trent Lott in the US Senate , new elections were announced for April 2008 for the position of Congressman for the first constituency. Childers won these elections after a runoff against Republican Greg Davis . Even with the regular elections of 2008 to Childers won against Davis.

From May 13, 2008 to January 3, 2011 he represented his constituency's interests in Congress as a member of his constituency . Most recently he was a member of the Agriculture Committee and the Finance Committee as well as two sub-committees each. He was considered to be more conservative in certain areas and was against, for example, tightening gun laws and abortions. In the economic field he was more open to the positions of his party. Childers campaigned for better education policies and a troop withdrawal from Iraq . The attempt to re-elect in 2010 against the Republican Alan Nunnelee failed . In 2014 Childers was the Democratic candidate for the US Senate, but was defeated by incumbent Thad Cochran .

Childers has two children with his wife Tami. In his private life he lives in Booneville.
