Hubert Durrett Stephens (born July 2, 1875 in New Albany , Mississippi , †  March 14, 1946 in Union County , Mississippi) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Mississippi in both chambers of the US Congress .

After attending school, Stephens enrolled at the University of Mississippi Law School, graduating in 1896. In the same year he became a member of the bar association and began practicing in his hometown. From 1907 to 1910 he served as the district attorney for the Mississippi Second Judicial District.

In 1910 he made the transition from justice to politics. After being elected to the US House of Representatives and repeatedly confirmed by voters, Stephens was a member of this Chamber of Parliament from March 4, 1911 to March 3, 1921. He returned to Congress the following year after being elected US Senator for Mississippi. He spent two terms in the Senate between March 4, 1923 and January 3, 1935 and ran again in 1934, but was defeated in the Democratic primary elections Theodore Gilmore Bilbo .

After the end of his political career, Hubert Stephens held the post of director of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation between 1935 and 1936 , an independent government agency that supported economic reconstruction after the Great Depression . He then worked as a lawyer in Washington until 1941 , before returning to his farm near his birthplace New Albany, where he died in March 1946.
