Benjamin Grubb Humphreys II (born August 17, 1865 in Claiborne County , Mississippi , † October 16, 1923 in Greenville , Mississippi) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1923 he represented the third constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Benjamin Humphreys, the son of Governor Benjamin G. Humphreys , attended public schools in Lexington , Mississippi, and then studied at the University of Mississippi , Oxford . At that time he also worked in retail for some time. After studying law and his admission to the bar in 1891, he began to work in Greenwood in his new profession. Between 1892 and 1896 he was also a school councilor in Leflore County . From 1895 to 1903 he was a district attorney in the fourth judicial district of Mississippi. This time was interrupted by his military service during the Spanish-American War , in which he served as a lieutenant under the command of General Fitzhugh Lee in Florida .

Humphreys was a member of the Democratic Party and was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in 1902 in the third district of Mississippi . There he replaced Pat Henry on March 4, 1903 . After ten re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until his death on October 16, 1923. Between 1911 and 1913 he was chairman of the committee that dealt with the US territories; from 1915 to 1919 he was a member of the committee that dealt with flood protection.

Benjamin Humphreys was the father of William Y. Humphreys , who would become his immediate successor in Congress.
