George Colin McKee (born October 2, 1837 in Joliet , Illinois , † November 17, 1890 in Jackson , Mississippi ) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1875 he represented the fourth and fifth constituencies of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George McKee attended Knox College and Lombard College , both in Galesburg, Illinois. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1858, he began to work in Centralia in his new profession. During the Civil War he was a soldier in the Union Army, in which he was a member of an infantry regiment from Illinois. After the Civil War, McKee moved his law firm to Vicksburg , Mississippi. He also became a farmer in Hinds County . From 1867 he also worked as a bankruptcy administrator. Politically, McKee was a member of the Republican Party . In 1868 he attended a meeting to revise the Mississippi Constitution as a delegate.

In 1866 McKee was elected as his party's candidate for the US House of Representatives. However, he did not even take up this mandate because, like all representatives from the former states of the Confederation , he would not have been admitted to Congress because they were not yet members of the Union again. After the state of Mississippi returned to the United States, he was then regularly elected to the House of Representatives. After some re-elections McKee could remain in Congress between February 23, 1870 and March 3, 1875, where he represented the fourth and then the fifth constituency of his state until 1873. Between 1873 and 1875 McKee chaired the committee that dealt with the administration of the US territories.

After his time in Congress was over, McKee returned to his private interests and worked as a lawyer. Between 1881 and 1885 he was a postman in Jackson, the capital of the state of Mississippi. From 1889 until his death in 1890 he was a tax collector in Jackson.
