Clarke Lewis (born November 8, 1840 in Huntsville , Alabama , † March 13, 1896 in Macon , Mississippi) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1893 he represented the seventh constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1844, Clarke Lewis came to Noxubee County in Mississippi with his mother . There he attended public schools and later the Somerville Institute . After that he taught himself as a teacher for a few years. During the Civil War he was a soldier in the army of the Confederate States . After the end of the war, Lewis initially worked as a teacher again. In 1866 and 1867 he was then employed in a shop. He then worked in both trade and agriculture until 1879.

Lewis was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1878 he was a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives . In the congressional elections of 1888 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington , where he succeeded Frederick G. Barry on March 4, 1889 . After re-election in 1890, Lewis was able to serve two terms in Congress until March 3, 1893 .

After the end of his time in Congress, Lewis turned back to his private interests, especially agriculture. He died near Macon in March 1896.
