Michael Patrick Guest (* 4. February 1970 in Woodbury , New Jersey ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . Since January 3, 2019, he has represented the US state Mississippi in the United States House of Representatives .

Career

Michael Guest grew up in the town of Brandon , where he attended high school before he began studying accounting at Mississippi State University , which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1993. At the University of Mississippi he also studied law until 1995, where he graduated with the degree of Juris Doctor . Between 1994 and 2008 he then worked as Assistant District Attorney for Madison and Rankin Counties in his home state. He has been a District Attorney since 2008 .

In the November 2018 election to the 116th United States Congress , Guest ran for Mississippi's 3rd Congressional constituency after Rep. Gregg Harper failed to run for the seat again. During the primary election, none of the Republican candidates received the required majority of 50% of the vote. In the runoff election, Guest prevailed with 65% of the votes against his party colleague Whit Hughes. During the General Election, he ran against the Democrat Michael Evans , against whom he prevailed with around more than 62% of the electoral vote, making him move into Congress , where he was sworn in on January 3, 2019.

Personal and positions

Guest is married to Haley Kennedy. Together they are the parents of two sons and live in Brandon. They are members of the Brandon Baptist Church. Guest is a supporter of US President Donald Trump . Like him, he campaigns for tax breaks and against illegal immigration and also calls for a border wall with Mexico . He is also considered an opponent of abortion and advocates the 2nd amendment to the constitution , which guarantees the right to carry a weapon.
