Patrick Henry (politician, 1843)
Patrick Henry (born February 12, 1843 in Cynthia , Madison County , Mississippi , † May 18, 1930 in Brandon , Mississippi) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1901 he represented the sixth constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Patrick Henry was the uncle of Pat Henry of the same name , who was a congressman from the third district of Mississippi between 1901 and 1903. The elder Patrick Henry attended schools in his home country as well as Mississippi College in Clinton and Madison College in Sharon . At the Nashville Military College in Nashville ( Tennessee ) he finished his school education. In 1858 he moved to Brandon, Mississippi.
During the Civil War he went into the army of the Confederate States of up to major. On April 26, 1865, he surrendered with his unit in Greensboro ( North Carolina ). On his return to Mississippi, he devoted himself to agriculture in Hinds and Rankin Counties until 1873. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1873, he began to work in Brandon in his new profession.
Henry was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1878 and 1890 he was a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives . In 1890 he was a delegate at a meeting to revise the state constitution of this state. In 1896 he became deputy federal district attorney. In the congressional election of 1896 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he replaced James G. Spencer on March 4, 1897 . After re-election in 1898, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1901 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 and the accession of new territories to the United States, including Hawaii .
For the congressional elections of 1900, Henry was no longer nominated by his party for another legislative term. After that he worked again as a lawyer in Brandon. Between 1904 and 1908 Brandon was a member of the Mississippi Senate . He was mayor of his hometown Brandon from 1916 until his death in 1930.
