William Taylor Sullivan Barry
William Taylor Sullivan Barry (born December 10, 1821 in Columbus , Mississippi , † January 29, 1868 there ) was a politician from the US state Mississippi. He was a member of the Democratic Party .
Career
William Barry was born in Columbus, Lowndes County . He graduated from Yale College in 1841 , studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1844. He then began to practice in Columbus. He was also busy with planting. Barry decided to pursue a political career. He ran for a seat in the House of Representatives from Mississippi in 1849 , where he remained after a successful election until 1851. Then he was elected as a Democrat in the 33rd US Congress . His term there went from March 4, 1853 to March 3, 1855. He was then re-elected to the House of Representatives from Mississippi, where he held the office of speaker in 1855. He was also President of the State Convention of Secession in 1861 . He also represented his state as a deputy at the Provisional Confederate Congress . When the Civil War broke out in the attack on Fort Sumter in April 1861, Barry enlisted a short time later in the Confederate States Army , where he served in the 35th Infantry Regiment of Mississippi, temporarily as brigade commander . He was captured at Mobile on April 12, 1865 . After the war he resumed his work as a lawyer in Columbus, where he died on January 29, 1868. He was buried in the "Odd Fellows Cemetery".
