Charles Willis "Chip" Pickering Jr. (born August 10, 1963 in Laurel , Jones County , Mississippi ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). Between 1997 and 2009 he represented the third constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Pickering graduated from RH Watkins High School in his birthplace Laurel and studied at the University of Mississippi until 1986 . He then attended Baylor University in Waco ( Texas ) until 1989 . After that he was briefly active in missionary work for the Baptists in Hungary . In 1989, President George Bush sent him to the former Eastern Bloc states as a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture to help build up agriculture. He held this office until 1990. He then served on the staff of US Senator Trent Lott between 1992 and 1996 .

In 1996, Pickering was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the third district of Mississippi . There he replaced the Democrat Sonny Montgomery on January 3, 1997 . After several re-elections, Pickering was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 2009. He was a member of the Energy and Trade Committee and three sub-committees. Pickering was considered a more conservative MP. In 2008 he decided not to run again. In 2007, his name was linked to a possible application for the US Senate. Pickering has contradicted these rumors and signaled his lack of interest in such a candidacy.

Chip Pickering is married to Leisha Jane Pickering, who has filed for divorce. The couple have five children. Pickering currently lives in New Hebron, Mississippi.
