geography

Laurel is located at 31 ° 41'51 "north latitude and 89 ° 8'22" west longitude. The closest major cities are Jackson (120 kilometers northwest) and New Orleans (200 kilometers southwest). The Interstate-59 highway runs through town.

history

Broad-leaved bay rose,
mountain-laurel ( Kalmia latifolia )

Laurel was founded in 1882. Due to the abundance of forests in the area, a pronounced timber industry soon developed. After the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad railway line was built, several sawmills began operating in the years that followed. Because of the pure yellow color of the wood of the processed softwood , the products were in great demand. In the early 1900s, Laurel was the world leader in supplying these products. The name of the city goes back to the bushes of the broad-leaved bay rose ( Kalmia latifolia ), locally known as mountain laurel , which were abundant in the entire region at that time . Due to the increased forestry, their stock has now declined noticeably.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the city and caused significant damage.

Today, in addition to the wood industry, Laurel also houses the oil, gas, metalworking and electrical industries. Mississippi's oldest art museum , the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art , is in the city.

Demographic data

In 2009 a population of 18,831 people was determined, which means an increase of 2.4% compared to the year 2000. The increase can mainly be explained by the fact that people from the southern coastal regions, who had lost their existence as a result of Hurricane Katrina, looked for a new home in Laurel. The average age of the residents in 2009 was 34.7 years.
