Ben Thigpen

Benjamin F. "Ben" Thigpen (born November 16, 1908 in Laurel (Mississippi) , † October 5, 1971 ) was an American jazz drummer .

Thigpen took piano lessons from his sister as a child, then switched to drums. He first played in Bobby Boswell's band and then moved to Chicago , where he took lessons from Jimmy Bertrand and accompanied dancers. In 1926 he can be heard on recordings by Ma Rainey ; then until 1929 he played with the Creole band of Charlie Elgar , with whom he recorded in 1926, but also with Doc Cheatham . From 1930 to 1947 he was part of Andy Kirk's Clouds of Joy , with which he is represented on numerous recordings from 1936; in addition, from 1938 Mary Lou Williams , who was the pianist of this group, drew him to recordings under her name. Then he led his own bands in St. Louis, but they were not documented on record. He also acted temporarily as chairman of the local musicians' union. Later he was part of the Dixieland Six of Singleton Palmer , with whom he went to the studio in 1964 and the 1967th He also taught Charles Bobo Shaw .

He is the father of the musicians Bensid and Ed Thigpen .
