Jimmy Bertrand

Jimmy Bertrand (* 24. February 1900 in Biloxi , Mississippi ; † August 1960 ) was an American jazz - and blues - drummer .

Bertrand grew up in a musical environment in Mississippi; one cousin is drummer Andrew Hilaire . In 1913 he moved to Chicago , where he played from 1918 in the band of Erskine Tate , which appeared at the Vendome Theater . During the 1920s, Bertrand had his own band, Jimmy Bertrand's Washboard Wizzards . He also played with Tiny Parham (1926) and made recordings with well-known musicians such as Louis Armstrong , Jimmy Blythe (1926–31), Johnny Dodds (1926–28), Tampa Red , Ma Rainey , Freddie Keppard , Erskine Tate, Big Bill Broonzy and Blind Blake . In the early 1930s he played with Parham, Lee Collins and Junie Cobb (1932), Eddie South (1931-33) and Ruben Reeves (1934). Although he still worked with his own formations until 1945, he was mostly active as a music teacher; his students included u. a. Wallace Bishop , Lionel Hampton and Sid Catlett . He used a washboard on many recordings ; he also played the xylophone . In the 1940s, Bertrand left the music scene and worked in meat factories. He probably died in August 1960.
