The plant is located in the municipality of Nejapa , around 12 kilometers north of the capital San Salvador . Nejapa Power Plant was established in 1994 and went online in 1995. The operator is Nejapa Power Company LLC

The power plant consists of 27 Wärtsilä V32 diesel generators built in Finland that run on heavy fuel oil . The installed capacity is 140 MW and around 520 GWh of electrical energy is produced annually.

Nejapa Power Plant is part of the network of hydropower plants Hidroeléctrica Guajoyo , Hidroeléctrica 15 de Septiembre , Hidroeléctrica 5 de Noviembre and Hidroeléctrica Cerrón Grande .
