The New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad (NO NE) was an American Class I - railway company in Louisiana and Mississippi . The society existed from 1868 to 1969.
history
The company was licensed on October 14, 1868 in Louisiana and March 30, 1871 in Mississippi. The aim was to build a 315-kilometer-long railway line between New Orleans and Meridian . Construction was delayed until the early 1880s. In 1881 the British holding company Alabama, New Orleans and Texas Pacific Junction Railways took control of NO&NE. Construction began the following year and was completed on November 1, 1883. In November 1916, JP Morgan & Company acquired the company on behalf of the Southern Railway . The route now formed part of the "Queen & Crescent Route" of the Southern Railway between Cincinnati and New Orleans. The operation took place from this point on by the Southern Railway. In 1969 the company was incorporated into the Southern Railway subsidiary Alabama Great Southern Railroad . The line continues to operate and is part of the Norfolk Southern Railway .
In addition to its own route, the company had route use rights over the Alabama and Vicksburg Railway and the Meridian Terminal Company in Meridian to reach Terminal Station and in New Orleans over the New Orleans Terminal Company route from Terminal Junction to Canal Street to the own train station in the city center.
