Samuel Andrew Witherspoon
Samuel Andrew Witherspoon (born May 4, 1855 in Columbus , Lowndes County , Mississippi , † November 24, 1915 in Meridian , Mississippi) was an American politician . Between 1911 and 1915 he represented the fifth constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Samuel Witherspoon attended public schools in his home country. In 1872 he moved to Oxford , Mississippi with his mother . There Samuel attended the University of Mississippi until 1876 , where he taught himself between 1876 and 1879. After studying law and his admission to the bar in 1879, he began practicing his new profession in Meridian, Lauderdale County . He became a senior member of the American Bar Association. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1898 he was an opponent of the Spanish-American War .
In the 1910 congressional elections, Samuel Witherspoon was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Adam M. Byrd on March 4, 1911 . After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on November 24, 1915 . His term of office would actually have run until March 3, 1917. After the by-election was due, his mandate went to William W. Venable . Witherspoon was buried in Meridian. It is noteworthy that he returned his congressional salary to the state budget for the period when there were no meetings and he was working as a private lawyer.
