Centralia is a city in the south of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . The city's territory is spread over four counties: Marion County , Clinton County , Washington County, and Jefferson County . In 2000 Centralia had a total population of 14,136 people. The city was founded in 1856 on the site where the two original lines of the Illinois Central Railroad met.

Numerous famous people were born in Centralia, including Morris Huck ( March 7, 1937 ), James Brady ( August 29, 1940 ) and Gary Gaetti ( August 19, 1958 ). The city is also home to Kaskaskia College and hosts an annual hot air balloon festival; the last festivals had around 40 hot air balloons.

Centralia is 60 miles east of the Mississippi River , which forms the border between Illinois and Missouri between the cities of St. Louis and East St. Louis .

Centralia is at the intersection of several railway lines. US Highway 51 also runs through the city and crosses Illinois State Route 161 in the city center .

In the 2000 census, the population was 14,136. These were distributed over 5,784 households in 3,568 families. The population density was 727.7 per km². There were 6,276 buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 323.1 per km².

The population in 2000 was 86.50% white , 10.34% African American , 0.25% Native American , 0.73% Asian and 0.47% other. 1.71% stated that they descended from at least two of these groups. 1.20% of the population were Hispanics from any of the above groups.

24.3% were under 18 years of age, 8.1% between 18 and 24, 25.9% between 25 and 44, 22.2% between 45 and 64 and 19.6% 65 and over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 women there were statistically 85.6 men, and 80.5 among the over 18 year olds.

The median income per household was $ 31,905 and the median family income was $ 39,123. The average income for men was $ 30,511 and that for women was $ 21,967. The per capita income was $ 17,174. Around 11.2% of families and 14.6% of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
