The city is located 119 km southeast of St. Louis , 65 km north of Marion , 71 km northeast of Carbondale , 94 km southwest of Effingham and 124 km northwest of Evansville .
history
Mount Vernon was founded by Zadok Casey . The name "Mount Vernon" comes from George Washington's country estate near Alexandria , Virginia , which in turn was named after the British naval hero Edward Vernon .

Economic life is characterized by small businesses and numerous catering establishments, with large operations such as the central warehouse of the Walgreens pharmacy chain and the Continental Tire plant being located in Mount Vernon.
