Continental Tire Plant

The Continental Tire plant in Mount Vernon is one of two remaining tire plants of Continental AG in the United States , along with Sumter , after the plant in Mayfield (Kentucky ) was closed in 2004 and the plant in Charlotte (North Carolina) in 2006 . The plant consists of the car tire and truck tire departments.

history

The plant was founded in the 1970s by the General Tire tire company . Since the takeover of General Tire by Continental AG in 1987, the plant has belonged to the Continental Tire Division .

Investments

Between 2007 and 2009, Continental AG will invest a total of 160 million dollars in expanding the Mount Vernons site. The aim of this investment is to meet the increasing demand and to cover 90% of the tires sold in the United States with US production in the future. In addition, the investment creates free capacities in other plants that are to be used to supply the markets in Europe and Asia.

education

In July 2007 the "Continental University" was founded at the Mount Vernon location. This university is operated in cooperation with the Rend Lake College and enables the employees to acquire the "Associate Degree", which is comparable to a vocational college degree. The degree program also includes a bachelor's degree, which can be obtained from Southern Illinois University .
