Walter Leake (born May 25, 1762 in Albemarle County , Colony of Virginia , † November 17, 1825 in Mount Salus , Mississippi , United States ) was an American politician and governor of Mississippi from 1822-1825.

biography

Walter Leake studied law and then practiced in Hinds County, Mississippi. In 1807, Leake was appointed a Mississippi Territory Judge by US President Thomas Jefferson . His entry into politics took place in 1817 after he was elected to the US Senate as a member of the Democratic Republican Party for the now founded state of Mississippi. Leake was, among other things, instrumental in integrating Mississippi into the Union. He held office from December 10, 1817 to May 15, 1820. Leake served as federal judge of Mississippi from 1821 to 1822, and successfully ran for governor in 1821. Leake's tenure began on January 7, 1822, and ended with his death four years later.

Walter Leake was married and had three children with his wife Elizabeth. One of his descendants is John McCain , US Senator from Arizona since 1987 .
