Jonathon Tate Reeves (* 5. June 1974 in Florence , Rankin County , Mississippi ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He has been the governor of the state of Mississippi since January 14, 2020 . He previously served as lieutenant governor .

Family, education and work

Tate Reeves graduated from Florence High School and Millsaps College in Jackson , from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics. He then worked in the banking industry as well as in the financial sector. From 2000 he was investment advisor to the Trustmark Investment Strategy Committee and served as Assistant Vice President at the regional bank AmSouth .

Reeves has three children with his wife, Elee. You live in Florence , Mississippi. He is a methodist .

Political career

Between 2004 and 2012, Reeves was his state's Treasury Secretary as State Treasurer .

In the 2011 election Reeves was the running mate of Phil Bryant was elected Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi. He held this office from 2012. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In the election in 2015 he was confirmed in office. Reeves was under discussion as a possible successor to outgoing US Senator Thad Cochran . Because of his young family, he refused.

For the nomination for the 2019 gubernatorial election , he was the favorite in the internal party primary of the Republican Party. In the first round on August 6, 2019, he reached first place, but remained under an absolute majority and therefore had to run a runoff election against the former judge of the Mississippi Supreme Court, Bill Waller. Reeves won this on August 27, 2019 with 54 to 46 percent of the vote; Waller had campaigned for an increase in taxes to expand the infrastructure and for permission to apply for federal aid for an expansion of Medicaid . In the main election on November 5, 2019, Reeves prevailed against longtime Attorney General Mississippis, Democrat Jim Hood .
