Duncan Stewart (politician, 1763)

Duncan Stewart (born 1763 in Bladen County , Province of North Carolina , †  November 26, 1820 in Woodville , Mississippi ) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1820 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Mississippi.

Life

Duncan Stewart was the son of William Stewart, who immigrated from Scotland around 1730 . He grew up in North Carolina and took part in the Revolutionary War despite his youth . He rose to the rank of colonel. Then he worked as a planter , also in his later places of residence . In doing so, he made considerable fortune. Politically, he began his career as a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina . Around 1797 he moved with his twin brother James to Clarksville , Tennessee , where he was also elected to the local House of Representatives. The Stewart County is named after him. He then lived in Wilkinson County , what was to become the state of Mississippi. Here, too, he was successful as a planter. In 1813 he became a member of the Mississippi Territory House of Representatives .

After Mississippi joined the Union, Stewart was elected lieutenant governor alongside David Holmes . He held this office between October 7, 1817 and January 5, 1820. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He also held the office of Surveyor General . He also sat in the Mississippi House of Representatives . He died in Woodville on November 26, 1820.
