GD Shands

Garvin Dugas "GD" Shands (born December 5, 1844 in Spartanburg , South Carolina , †  July 1, 1917 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an American politician . Between 1882 and 1890 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Mississippi .

Career

GD Shands attended Wofford College in his hometown. During the Civil War he served in two South Carolina units that were part of the Confederate Army . After the war, he settled in Panola County , Mississippi, where he taught as a teacher. After studying law at the University of Kentucky and his admission as a lawyer in 1870, he began to work in Senatobia in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1876 and 1880 he was a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives .

In 1881 GD Shands was elected Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi, alongside Robert Lowry . He held this office between 1882 and 1890. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After serving as Lieutenant Governor, Shands was a senior lecturer in law at the University of Mississippi . He died on July 1, 1917 in New Orleans.
