James Patton

James Patton (* 1780 in South Carolina , †  May 3, 1830 in Winchester , Mississippi ) was an American politician . Between 1820 and 1822 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Mississippi.

Career

Nothing is known about James Patton's youth and schooling. At an unknown point in time, he came to Winchester, Mississippi Territory . There he was very popular and influential. He was known for his rhetoric and skillful writing style. Due to possible Indian attacks, he founded the local militia and had Fort Winchester built. In 1808 he was the first to sign a petition establishing Wayne County . After the establishment of this district, he held various offices at the courts there.

In 1819, Patton was elected Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi alongside George Poindexter . He held this office between 1820 and 1822. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . His party affiliation is not given in the sources. But it is likely that like Governor Poindexter he was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . James Patton died in Winchester on May 3, 1830.
