Elga Koch

Elga Koch (* 1928 in Hamburg ; † April 1, 2014 on La Palma , Canary Islands ) was a German circumnavigator and author .

Together with her husband Ernst-Jürgen Koch (1923–2003) she was one of the pioneers of circumnavigation. She was the first woman to sail the Passat route in a sailing boat from 1964 to 1967 . The reports about the trade route, which is frequently sailed today, were new at the time. In 1971, she co- authored her husband with Das Logbuch der Kairos: Weltumegelung 1964–1967 and worked with him on other books of their sailing trips together. Elga Koch is considered the grande dame of cruising sailors .

After a fire in her house, where she had lived on the Canary Island of La Palma since the death of her husband in 2003, she succumbed to severe burns in the hospital on April 1st, 2014.
