Benjamin Harrison Reeves (born March 21, 1787 in Augusta County , Virginia , †  April 16, 1849 in Todd County , Kentucky ) was an American politician . In 1824 and 1825 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Missouri .

Career

Benjamin Reeves first grew up in his home state of Virginia. Around 1800 he and his parents moved to Christian County in Kentucky, which at that time was largely in the wilderness. Shortly afterwards his father died. Together with his mother, he now had to look after and care for the younger family members. During the British-American War of 1812 , he served in the Indiana Territory in the American armed forces, where he rose to major. Politically, he joined the Democratic Republican Party . He served in the Kentucky House of Representatives for 1815, 1816, and 1817 . Then he moved to the Missouri Territory . In 1820, he attended the Missouri State Constituent Assembly as a delegate. Then he was a State Auditor and member of the State Senate .

In 1824 Reeves was elected lieutenant governor of Missouri alongside Frederick Bates . He held this office between November 15, 1824 and his resignation in July 1825. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. His resignation came after his appointment as one of three federal commissioners for the Santa Fe Trail , but proved to be a bit premature in his view. Shortly thereafter, on August 4, 1825, Governor Bates died and Reeves could have assumed his post as Lieutenant Governor. This now fell to the previous President Pro Tempore of the State Senate, Abraham J. Williams , who could exercise it until a special election. As early as late September 1825, Reeves' work for the Santa Fe Trail ended . In the following years until 1836 he took part in some Indian wars and in the 1830s he sat again in the State Senate. Then he returned to Kentucky, where he worked in agriculture and was elected several times to the local House of Representatives. He died on April 16, 1849 at his Todd County manor.
