Harriett Woods

Harriett Woods (born June 2, 1927 in Cleveland , Ohio , †  February 8, 2007 in University City , Missouri ) was an American politician . Between 1985 and 1989 she was lieutenant governor of the state of Missouri.

Career

Ruth Harriett Friedman, so her maiden name, studied at the University of Michigan philosophy . She later worked as a journalist and in the TV industry. Politically, she joined the Democratic Party . Between 1962 and 1970 she was a member of the University City Council; from 1976 to 1984 she was a member of the Missouri Senate . In 1982 and 1986 she ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate .

In 1984, Woods was elected Lieutenant Governor of Missouri. This office she held between January 14, 1985 and January 9, 1989. She was Deputy Republican Governor John Ashcroft and Chair of the State Senate. To this day she is the only woman who has been elected lieutenant governor of her state. Even after her time as Lieutenant Governor, Harriett Woods remained politically active. Between 1991 and 1995 she was chair of the National Women's Political Caucus . In January 2001, she joined the unsuccessful Democratic opposition to the appointment of John Ashcroft as United States Attorney General . She died on February 8, 2007 in University City.
