Albert Pickett Morehouse (born July 11, 1835 in Delaware County , Ohio , † September 23, 1891 ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and from 1887 to 1889 the 26th governor of Missouri .

Early years

Albert Morehouse attended public schools in his homeland in Ohio. In 1856 he moved to Missouri, where he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1860. He then began to work in this profession in Maryville . During the American Civil War he was First Lieutenant in the Union Army . Albert Morehouse was married to Martha E. McFadden, with whom he had three children.

Political career

Morehouse was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1872 and 1876 . In 1877 and 1883, Morehouse was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives . From 1885 he was vice governor of his country. When the incumbent Governor John S. Marmaduke died in office on December 28, 1887, Morehouse had to end his beginning term.

During his tenure, an alcohol law was passed that left it to the individual administrative districts to introduce or reject prohibition . A Chamber of Commerce was established in St. Louis . The American Federation of Labor also met in St. Louis at that time . Morehouse also had to deal with a railroad strike.

Another résumé

After a little over a year, Morehouse's tenure as governor ended on January 14, 1889. After that, he retired from politics. He devoted himself to his private affairs. This also included cattle breeding. There there was a momentous accident in 1891 in which a blood clot formed in the brain, which at times led to mental confusion. During one such attack, two days after the accident on September 23, 1891, he cut his throat with a knife.
