Arthur M. Hyde

Arthur Mastick Hyde (born July 12, 1877 in Princeton , Mercer County , Missouri , † October 17, 1947 in New York City ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who served in the cabinet of US President Herbert C. Hoover as Agriculture Minister belonged. He was also the 35th governor of Missouri from 1921 to 1925 .

Early years

Hyde attended the Oberlin Academy in Ohio and then the University of Michigan until 1899 . He then studied law at the University of Iowa . In 1900 he received his law degree there. He then began practicing as a lawyer in Trenton , Missouri.

Political advancement and governor of Missouri

Between 1910 and 1914, Hyde was mayor of Princeton City. In November 1920 he was elected the new governor of Missouri. Arthur Hyde took office on January 10, 1921. During his four-year tenure, women were admitted to government offices. Tax law was reformed and school policy improved. The country's roads were expanded and the state parks expanded.

Even after his governorship, Hyde remained politically active. Between 1929 and 1933 he was US Secretary of Agriculture in the Hoover cabinet . In 1935 he organized a Methodist lay conference. Arthur Hyde died of cancer on October 17, 1947. He was married to Hortense Cullers, with whom he had a child.
