William Marion Jardine (born January 16, 1879 in Oneida County , Idaho , † January 17, 1955 in San Antonio , Texas ) was an American agricultural scientist , university rector , United States Secretary of Agriculture and ambassador .

biography

After attending school, he studied agricultural science at the Agricultural College of Utah , where he earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in 1904 . He then worked from 1905 to 1906 as a professor at the Graduate School of Utah . In 1910 he became an agronomist at the research station of the Kansas State Agricultural College and was also president of the American Society of Agronomy from 1916 to 1917 . In 1918 he became president of the Kansas State Agricultural College and held that office until 1925.

On March 5, 1925, William Marion Jardine was appointed Secretary of Agriculture ( US Secretary of Agriculture ) in his cabinet by US President Calvin Coolidge . He held this cabinet post until the end of Coolidge's presidency on March 4, 1929.

After serving as Ambassador to Egypt from 1930 to 1933, he was State Treasurer of the State Government of Kansas for one year during the tenure of Governor Alf Landon .

Most recently he was President of the Municipal University of Wichita from 1934 to 1939 .

He was also involved in many other organizations and institutions, and at times also a member of the agriculture committee of the Advisory Board of the American Bankers Association , a member of the American Forestry Association , Director of Public concerns of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka , a member of the Board of Federal Savings and Loan , chairman of the Investment Corporation of America , director of the National Research Council , director of the National Safety Council, and vice president of the National Academy of Sciences . The Freemason also worked for Rotary International .
