Michael Owen "Mike" Johanns (* 18th June 1950 in Osage , Iowa ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He was the governor of the state of Nebraska from 1999 to 2005 , US Secretary of Agriculture from 2005 to 2007, and a member of the United States Senate for Nebraska from January 2009 to January 2015 .

Early years and political advancement

Mike Johanns attended St. Marys College in Winona ( Minnesota ) after primary school until 1971 . He then studied law at Creighton University in Omaha . After graduation and admission to the bar, he began practicing the profession in O'Neill and then in Nebraska's capital, Lincoln .

In 1982, Johanns was elected to the County Board of Lancaster County . In 1989 he became a councilor in Lincoln. From 1991 to 1998 he was mayor of the city of Lincoln and was then elected as the new governor of Nebraska in 1998 with 54 percent of the vote against Democrat Bill Hoppner. In 2002 he was confirmed in this office against Stormy Dean with 69:27 percent.

Johanns took up his new office on January 7, 1999. During his tenure, which ended on January 20, 2005, he campaigned for tax breaks and a strong economy in Nebraska. For this purpose he accompanied trade delegations to Asia, Australia and South America in order to establish economic contacts there. It also encouraged the creation of new jobs, especially in rural areas. In addition, government austerity measures were introduced, including restrictions on the use of company vehicles. In the area of ​​internal security, criminal law has been tightened and the protection of minors has been strengthened. Johanns was a member of numerous governor's associations.

On December 2, 2004, Johanns was appointed by President George W. Bush to succeed Ann Veneman as the new US Secretary of Agriculture. On January 20, 2005, a few hours after Bush began his second term, Mike Johanns was confirmed by the Senate. On the same day, he resigned from his post as governor and was a member of the Bush cabinet until his resignation on September 20, 2007 . He justified his step with wanting to serve his country in another task. It soon became clear that he wanted to run for a seat in the US Senate in the 2008 election , which he did successfully. With 57.7 percent of the vote, he defeated the Democrat Scott Kleeb, replacing the no longer running Republican Chuck Hagel . In the Senate, Johanns sat on the agriculture , banking , trade and veterans committee . As one of four Republican Senators, he approved the appointment of his predecessor Hagel as the new US Secretary of Defense in February 2013 . In February 2013 he announced that he would not apply for a second term as senator in 2014 , but that he would retire into private life when his mandate ended. He resigned from the Senate on January 3, 2015.

Mike Johanns is married for the second time and has two children.
