Mark Whitaker Izard (born December 25, 1799 in Lexington , Kentucky , † 1866 ) was an American politician . He was governor of the Nebraska Territory between 1855 and 1857 .

Career

Mark Izard first made a career in Arkansas . There he belonged to both the House of Representatives and the State Senate . In 1848, he briefly served as a speaker in the Arkansas House of Representatives . In 1836 he was a member of the Arkansas Constituent Assembly.

After the death of the first governor of the Nebraska Territory, Francis Burt , who had served only two days in October 1854, he was succeeded by State Secretary Thomas B. Cuming . He had to administer the office until US President Franklin Pierce filled the position. The president chose Mark Izard, who then held this office between 1855 and 1857. With the arrival of the new governor, Cuming became State Secretary again. As governor, Izard resided in the capital, Omaha . The status of the capital was, however, heavily disputed between Omaha and Bellevue . In 1857 Izard resigned from his office, State Secretary Cuming had to serve again as interim governor. Mark Izard died in 1866 and was buried in Omaha.
