John Morehead

John Henry Morehead (born December 3, 1861 in Columbia , Marion County , Iowa , † May 30, 1942 in St. Joseph , Missouri ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and between 1913 and 1917 the 18th governor of the state Nebraska .

Early years and political advancement

Morehead attended local schools in his home in Iowa. He then graduated from Shenandoah Business College . In 1884 he moved to Nebraska, where he initially worked as a teacher and farmer. Later he also became a trader. Between 1896 and 1899 he was employed as a chamberlain in Richardson County . In 1900 he became mayor of the Falls City Ward . Between 1910 and 1912 he was a member and President of the Nebraska Senate . After the lieutenant governor's death , he also took over this office from 1911 to 1912. In November 1912, he was elected governor of his party as a candidate.

John Morehead took up his new office on January 9, 1913. After being re-elected in 1914, he was able to serve a total of four years. During his tenure, the national debt was reduced. At that time, the first members of a recently established control commission of the state organs were appointed and a new labor law was passed. In 1916 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention , where Woodrow Wilson was nominated for a second term as US President.

After the end of his tenure, Morehead remained politically active. In 1918 he applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the State Senate and in 1920 also unsuccessfully ran for a new term as governor. For this he was then elected to the US House of Representatives. There he was represented on various committees between 1923 and 1935. After his time in Congress was over , Morehead returned to his private affairs. He worked in the real estate business and in agriculture. In 1940 he was again a delegate at the Federal Democratic Party Congress, where Franklin D. Roosevelt was nominated for the third time for the presidency. Morehead died on May 30, 1942. He was married to Minnie Weisenreder, with whom he had two children.
