John Taffe

John Taffe (born January 30, 1827 in Indianapolis , Indiana , † March 14, 1884 in North Platte , Nebraska ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). Between 1867 and 1873 he represented the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Taffe attended public schools in his home country and then studied law. In 1856 he moved to the Nebraska Territory , where he was a member of the Territorial House of Representatives from 1858 to 1859. From 1860 to 1861 he was a member of the governing council of the territory.

During the Civil War , Taffe was a major in the Union Army. After the war, he returned to Nebraska. In 1866 he was elected a member of the US House of Representatives. There he replaced Turner M. Marquette on March 4, 1867 , who had only exercised this mandate for two days. After he was confirmed in 1868 and 1870, Taffe was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1873 . There he was from 1871 to 1873 chairman of the committee that dealt with the administration of the US territories ( Committee on Territories ). During his time in Congress the impeachment proceedings against President Andrew Johnson , which found the required majority in the House of Representatives, while it failed in the US Senate because of one vote, also fell.

After his time in Washington , John worked as a lawyer. He also ran the Receiver of Public Land Office in North Platte. He died there on March 14, 1884.
